Brunei medallists in last year’s 30th SEA Games in the Philippines were recognised for their achievements yesterday afternoon.
They received BND76,100 from the Sports Excellence Incentive Scheme (SPKS) under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports in a ceremony at the Indoor Stadium in Berakas.

Brunei Darussalam athletes collected two gold, five silver and six bronze medals. It was the largest medal count for the country at SEA Games held in a foreign country.
Thirty-six athletes, seven coaches, two assistant coaches and six national sports association received incentives from SPKS. The recipients participated in polo, netball, Wushu, lawn bowling, Pencak Silat and Karate events.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin presented the incentives to the recipients.
The recipients included His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen, Her Royal Highness Princess ‘Azemah Ni’matul Bolkiah and Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Bahar as part of the Brunei polo team that snatched the bronze medal in Division A. His Royal Highness Prince Haji Jefri Bolkiah received SPKS as part of the Brunei polo team that won gold in Division B. Her Royal Highness Princess Fadzilah Lubabul Bolkiah received the reward as part of the Brunei netball team that won a bronze medal.
Brunei’s Wushu team that bagged one gold, three silver and two bronze medals at the SEA Games received BND34,700.
Mohammad Adi Salihin bin Roslan who won the gold medal in the combined Nandao and Nangun events received BND10,000. Both Wushu coaches Zhao Chunjie and Li Hui received BND3,600 each. Assistant coach Ang Lu Guan received BND900. The Brunei Darussalam Wushu federation received BND3,600. Basma Lachkar received BND5,000 for the silver medal in Taijiquan and bronze medal in Tajijian. Hosea Wong Zheng Yu received BND5,000 for the silver medal in the Men’s Taijiquan and bronze medal in Men’s Taijijian. Majdurano Joel Majallah Sain and Mohammad Safiee Shayferan Roslan each received BND1,500 for bagging silver in the Men’s Duilian.
Permanent Secretary (Administration, Finance and Estate) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Pengiran Mohammad Amirrizal bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud said the ministry reassessed SPKS and individual gold medallists will receive increased incentives this year to motivate athletes to work hard towards achieving excellence.
He said the SPKS rewards national athletes, coaches and national sports associations for their success that bolsters the nation’s image at a regional and international level.
Pengiran Mohammad Amirrizal hoped top senior athletes will mentor young athletes by sharing experiences and skills. He advised athletes who didn’t capture any medals to continue to work hard.
