BRUNEI Darussalam’s national golf athlete Awangku Muhd Syakir bin Pengiran Haji Alli carded a nine-over-par 81 in the second round of the men’s individual golf at the 18th Asian Games at the Pondok Indah Golf and Country Club yesterday.
The national golfer made two double bogeys in the 10th and 12th hole as well as five bogeys in an error-strewn round.
Awangku Muhd Syakir languished in a tie for 62nd place with 15-over-par in the second round and a total score of 159. Mohd Aritz Maldini bin Haji Abdul Majid, the other national golfer, also found the second day to be a difficult outing after carding a 12-over-par 84.
The 18-year-old slipped to tie 70th place following the conclusion of the second day with 18-over-par 162.
Mohd Aritz Maldini encountered a difficult start in the first, fifth and ninth hole in the front nine with a double bogey on separate occasions as well as the 15th in the back nine.
He also made four bogeys in his scorecard as he faced difficulties in building on from the opening day. Overnight leader Keita Nakajima looked to be the athlete to beat after holding on to the lead with a four-under-par 68, equalling the same result as in the first round despite bogeying the par-four seventh hole in an otherwise solid run.
The Japanese teenager established a one-stroke lead over South Korea’s Hoyoung Choi who carded an impressive 68.
Choi sunk four birdies in the back nine to not only climb to second place but became Nakajima’s closest rival. India’s Aadil Bedi stayed in the hunt three strokes behind the clubhouse leader after picking up three bogeys in the second round. He sunk five birdies to be among the mix for medal contention.
Philippines’ Weiwei Gao catapulted into tied third place with Bedi after carding a second-round 67 having started the day in tied 14th place.
The Filipino ace landed seven birdies and two bogeys which came unnoticed to elevate him among the top of the leader-board.
