5 chess players from Brunei, along with national coach Grandmaster Tahir Vahidov, arrived safely in Tromso, Norway for the 41st Chess Olympiad and the 85th World Chess Federation (FIDE) Congress after departing the Sultanate on Thursday.
Md Aliuddin Hj Azahari, Siti Nur Fatimah Hj Azahari, Izzuddin Zain, Pg Kamarunsalehin Pg Kamis and Syairazi Suni will be representing the nation at the Aug 1-14 competition. Brunei Chess Federation vice president Pg Abd Rahman PLW Yussof is hoping that one of the players will return with a FIDE Master title.
According to a press release issued yesterday, Pg Abd Rahman said, "The atmosphere in the Chess Olympiad will be amazing since it will be a meeting place for some 2000 chess minds from all over the world and having the opportunity to meet and perhaps play against the world's best chess players will be an experience of a life time."
