The Crusaders went undefeated to win the Brunei Rugby Football Union (BRFU) Under-20 10s tournament yesterday.
They went on to outplay Vipers 17-10 during the final of the competition at the Sungai Kebun Sports Complex.
Crusaders captain Ak Muhd Muhsin Pg Hj Masri was very happy with the results and felt it was a great day for development rugby.
"It was a good turnout from the boys because some weren't going to come but ended up coming (anyway)," said Ak Muhd Muhsin.
"We didn't really have a lot of training and just came out as a team," he added.
The Crusaders started their day with a 20-0 win against the K Raiders before taking out the Vipers 33-0, which put them straight into the final.
Vipers secured their spot in the final after defeating K Raiders 12-5 in the playoff match to establish third place.
The Vipers finished second following the group stages, outplaying K Raiders 14-0 in their first match before their 33-0 loss to the Crusaders.
National rugby coach Ben Bourne used the competition to see where the juniors are at in terms of development.
"For me I'm looking at where we're at... set goals for the next tournaments and (it) gives us a glimpse of what we have to prepare us for the Asian Rugby Football Union Under-20s in June," said Bourne.
Bourne said that the camaraderie between the players has improved from last year.
"I'm actually seeing players telling jokes in the scrums and seeing things that make them laugh, so it's really good," said Bourne.
"When they're making a tackle I'm also hearing them say 'sorry bro', I wouldn't say it was a dream but it's actually what Brunei should have had a few years ago.
"I know the game was aggressive but just trying to differentiate what a real enemy is to your compatriot.
"It's good to see the sport grow, these guys have been playing for a while now so it's just a matter of maintaining the development."
The Co-Curriculum Education Department under the Ministry of Education co-organised the one day competition.
Head of Sports Development at the Co-Curriculum Education Department, Hj Puteh Hj Timbang handed out the medals to the three teams. The tournament is set to be part of their annual inter-school sports meet.
