The Knights Rugby Football Club are on track to claim the Dr Hj Kamaruddin Cup after taking out the Bandar Blacks 51-10 in the Brunei Rugby Football Union (BRFU) Premiership on Sunday.
Their final match of the league will see them go head-to-head with three-time league champions and four-time Darussalam Cup winners, Belait Pythons at the Sungai Kebun Sports Complex on Sunday at 4pm.
The Knights nine tries were scored by Md Alif Hj Jainal in the 1st and 60th minute, Md Kamarul Salihin in the 18th, Sui Poh Chai in the 34th and 51st, Md Syafiee Matali in the 42nd, Abdul Azim Hj Abu in the 54th, Ak Md Amir Ritauddin Pg Murshaidi in the 64th and Dinie Hj Abu Bakar in the 66th.
Knights Lim Shen Quan added to the points by knocking in three conversions at the Sungai Kebun Sports Complex.
The Bandar Blacks got their 10 points through Farhan Hamdani in the 34th minute and Mohd Amirul Fadhli Abd Rahim in the 74th.
Knights forward Syaihan Hj Abu Bakar was pleased with the effort that both teams brought to the pitch.
"We did well against the Bandar Blacks who fielded quite a strong side in which many experienced players were playing," Syaihan told The Brunei Times yesterday.
"The Bandar Blacks gave us a good fight up till the end.
"I feel the team is doing well currently, but we still need to improve more with many of our younger and new players that joined this year.
"The Belait Pythons are one of the favorites to win the league this year as most of their players have been in the game for quite a while," said Syaihan.
Despite the Pythons missing out on last year's BRFU Premiership, they marked their return to the tournament with a 26-5 victory against the defending league champions Miri Rhinos in their first game.
They then went on to edge the defending Darussalam Cup champions Universiti Brunei Darussalam Sharks 25-15.
The Pythons were scheduled to take on the Bandar Blacks for their third game two weekends ago, but due to the lack of spotlights, the game was postponed to a later date.
"In addition to that, the Pythons history of winning the Darussalam Cup and the Dr Hj Kamaruddin Cup tells it all," added Syaihan.
The Miri Rhinos, who sit on three losses, will head into their final match of the league against the Bandar Blacks at the Sungai Kebun Sports Complex on Saturday at 8pm.
