Physical education teachers from the Brunei-Muara District were treated to a hands on lesson of tennis yesterday.
They were taught the different ways to hold a racquet, the different styles of returns, aspects of hand to eye co-ordination and how to control the ball.
The teachers also sat through a theory session on March 13.
The last practical session for the second group will be conducted today at the National Tennis Centre of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.
The lesson was conducted by national player Mohd Aiman Abdullah, Brunei Darussalam Tennis Association (BDTA) tournament secretary Abdul Rasheed Abdullah and assistant secretary general Izannie Abu Bakar.
Izannie told The Brunei Times, "We are concentrating on mini tennis in schools because it's a beginners' programme so that they (students) don't get frustrated with the big court and end up not enjoying it."
"In a way when we deal with teachers, it's also another way for us to communicate with them if they have any enquiries about tennis," added Izannie.
The sessions for the teachers were organised by the Ministry of Education's Curriculum Development Department (CDD), with the help of the Youth and Sports Department under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
Prior to the tennis programme, CDD put the group of teachers on a hurdles course.
They have also assigned the teachers to learn more about volleyball, squash, tug of war, gasing (top spinning), lawn bowls and cricket.
The eight different sports will broaden the teachers' knowledge of sports which can then be shared with their students.
