DPMM FC captain Rosmin Hj Kamis (pic) believes that the club's new signings can help them win their first Singapore-League (S-League) title this season.
Brazilian Rodrigo Tosi converted a first half penalty to lift Brunei's only professional team to a 1-0 victory over Albirex Niigata.
The match featured all the club's new imports - striker Roy O'Donovan, defender Boris Raspudic and midfielders Joseph Gamble and Roberto Alviz.
"It is only the beginning of the season but it is a very good sign and it is also good for us to win against Albirex away from home," said Rosmin in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.
Newly appointed coach Steve Kean echoed the skipper's comments.
Singapore's goal.com reported that the coach already has his sights set on the trophy.
"We'd like to win the [Singapore] Cup and the league, and I think that would be a good season," Kean was quoted as saying.
"They (the management) wants to win the championship. For the next two years, we have committed to the league and they want to win it for the next two years. I believe we have assembled a squad that can not only do that, but do it in the cup competitions," he said at the post-match conference.
"I have seen tonight (Friday) that Albirex are a very good technical team, they try and move the ball and get it one-on-one in the wide areas and I thought they played really well and if that's the standard we are going to come up against then it's going to be a tough season," he added.
Striker Shahrazen Said and Wardun Yussof were the notable absentees at the Jurong East Stadium in Singapore on Friday.
DPMM FC goalkeeper Azman Ilham, stood in for the suspended Wardun, and did well in keeping a clean-sheet for the club.
DPMM FC star signing, former Sunderland striker O'Donovan, had his moments in the game but it was Tosi who made the headlines.
The Brazilian midfielder was brought down by Albirex's Kazuki Kishigami before stepping up to take and score the penalty in the 15th minute.
Despite the win, Rosmin said that Kean was still not satisfied with the team's coordination.
"The boss (Steve Kean) was not impressed with how we passed the ball in the game, but he insisted that it was important to get a win as all teams will have their good and bad days throughout the season," said the skipper.
"The new signings performed well in the game and I think they will play a very important role for the club this season,"
"They (new signings) adapted very well and they are also good people and they bring excellent environment in the dressing room"
"If we can continue this until the end of the season, we can win the league title," he saidd.
DPMM FC will host the Warriors at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas on Friday.
A meeting with Home United at the Bishan Stadium follows on March 14 before taking on the defending champions Tampines Rover on March 23.
