The Hawks will be crowned the champions of the 2nd Brunei Squash League tonight at the Squash Centre of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas despite not being in action.
Jerudong International School (JIS) Bulls will battle Institute of Higher Learning (IPT) Lions for a third-place finish tonight, while Army Team will go up against National Stadium Team in the final day of the tournament.
The Hawks will stay at the top of the league after building an unassailable lead with 119 points.
Their closest opponents is the National Stadium Team on 86 points followed by third-placed IPT Lions with 79 points.
JIS Bulls is fourth with 72 points while the Army Team is sitting at the bottom of the table with 67 points.
"We are very happy to win the tournament this season and I would like to thank all the players for their contribution in the victory," said the Hawks captain Rosman Roslin in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.
"Mokhsin Khan was our best player throughout the tournament, but anyways I would like to thank all the team members and as well as the organiser of the tournament,"
The champions, Hawks were held to a 2-2 draw by JIS Bulls in the 2nd Brunei Squash League on Tuesday.
There was only one match contested on the day after the Army Team failed to turn up for their match against the IPT Lions, thus giving the latter team a 4-0 win.
The Hawks started off strongly when Mokhsin put them ahead after defeating Vincent Lawrence 3-2 at the Squash Centre of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.
Rosman Roslin made it 2-0 for the Hawks after a 3-0 victory over Catherine Carter.
Phil Lowther would defeat Aziz Hj Japar 3-0 to pull one back for the JIS Bulls before Adrian Wallace Scott defeated Hjh Rosnah Lakim 3-0 as the game ended in a draw.
"I am very happy to be on top of my game this season and helped my team to win the competition," said Mokhsin.
"Squash is not famous and big like other sports in Brunei, but we will try our best to promote the sport to the people," he added.
The tournament, which is sanctioned by the Brunei Racquet Squash Association, is co-organised by 1stopbrunei.com and JIS to help develop young squash players and to promote the sport in the country.
The second edition has seen an increase of participation of female players, with each team competing in the tournament required to at least having one female athlete in their team.
"I am very happy with how the sport is expanding over the year, especially with the involvement of female athlete in this second season," said one of the organiser of the tournament Muhd Shavez Cheema in an recent interview with The Brunei Times.
A new unofficial team called the Loan Service team was also introduced in the league last month.
They will be playing any team which does not have a game as they will be joining the next edition of the league.
"For the third season, I am planning to organise the tournament in a bigger scale by offering some good prizes and we are hoping to get in a lot of sponsors too," continued Shavez.
