Wijaya FC believe that consistency will be the key to DST Super League success this season.

Wijaya finished sixth in the national elite league last season with 10 points after recording three wins, one draw and five losses.

They scored 21 goals and let in 23 goals.

Wijaya kicked off last season with a 4-2 victory over Kilanas FC. However, they were shocked in their next game with a 7-3 defeat to champions Indera Sports Club (SC).

They dropped another three points the following week with a 1-0 loss to Royal Brunei Armed Forces Sports Council (MS ABDB) before suffering a 4-0 defeat at the hands of QAF FC.

They lost to Royal Brunei Police Forces Sports Council (MS PDB) 2-1 and were thrashed 4-1 by Liang Lumut Recreational Club Football Team.

They would bounce back the following week with a 2-1 win over Jerudong FC, before being held 2-2 by Majra United - closing their season strongly with a 7-0 thrashing of Najip FC.

"We need to be more consistent this year and we must improve as other teams have improved a lot," said Wijaya's head coach Ahyana Hj Tali in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.

"We added a number of new players in the team and keep some of the senior players, (so) we hope that new players can deliver this year," he added.

The club's best player Ak Anaqi Sufi Pg Hj Omar will need to replicate his last season's brilliant form to help Wijaya to do well this year, and new defender Saifuddin Mohammad will also need to be at his best.

"Saifuddin is very talented and he will only improve alongside the senior players," continued Ahyana.

"We are targeting to stay competitive in the Super League for many years to come, and this year we are targeting a top-five finish," he added.

Wijaya started this year's campaign on a right foot after defeating Majra 1-0 at the Balapan Track and Field on Saturday, where Anaqi Sufi scored the only goal for Wijaya.

Wijaya will be facing Najip on Saturday at the Balapan Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas at 8pm.

Since its introduction in early 2000, Wijaya have established themselves as one of the top football teams in the country.

This season's DST Super League features 10 teams - MS ABDB, Indera, MS PDB, QAF, Majra, Kilanas, Jerudong, Wijaya, Najip and LLRC.

Last season saw champions Indera bring home the challenge trophy, championship trophy and a cash prize of $10,000.

Meanwhile, second placed MS ABDB walked away with a trophy and a cash prize of $7000.

The league kicked off on Jan 21 with QAF and Jerudong playing a 2-2 draw.
