Brunei's Wushu squad struck gold at the 5th World Traditional Wushu Championship in Huangsan, China.

The Wushu Federation of Brunei Darussalam (WFBD) sent eight athletes recently to compete at the Nov 5-11 tournament and they did the country proud returning with a medal haul of one gold, two silver and two bronze.

According to a press release by the WFBD yesterday, Koh Li Beoy was the biggest winner for the Sultanate, bagging gold medal in Group D of the Tai Chi Quan event.

Another exponent who tasted success at the November 6-11 competition was Paw Pik Choo.

She returned home with two silver medals from the Tai Chi Quan and Tai Chi Sword events.

Woo Chung Heng added bronze to the medal tally in the Group E Tai Chi Quan event. The other bronze medal winner was Yeo Sie Ping, who won the Tai Chi Quan event in group D.

According to Woo, who is also the vice-president of WFBD, this year's tournament saw no participation of young athletes from the country such as Faustina Woo Wai Sii and Lee Ying Shi.

"Our young athletes did not participate in the tournament this year. They are currently sitting for their exams. So we went on our own, using our own expenses. It was a good tournament and we managed to bring some medals home," he told The Brunei Times last night.

"I am very happy with our performances in the tournament. We were up against some 30, 000 wushu exponents from 56 countries from all over the world.

"In the final round of my category alone, I faced 24 participants coming from Japan, Korea, Australia and other countries. We hope to participate in the 6th edition of the tournament in 2014," he said.
