Four 25-metre national records were broken at the 10th Fina World Short Course Championships at the Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Sports Complex in the UAE yesterday.
The Sultanate's most prolific swimmer, Amanda Liew Jia Xin, clocked 28.56 seconds in the 50m freestyle to offset her previous record of 29.25s set in Japan. She ranked 69 of 101 swimmers in the event.
Meanwhile Anderson Lim carved his name into the history books by being the Sultanate's first swimmer to clock under 57s in the 100m freestyle. The 15-year-old's swim of 56.82s in Dubai, which erased the old time of 58.4s, put him at 99 of 125.
Late bloomer Lim Jyh Jye made it a debut to remember by breaking two more national records, 1:06.06 for the 100m individual medley (68 of 83) and 33.24s in the 50m breaststroke (73 of 102). The old records stood at 1:12.00 and 35.23s respectively for each events.
The 20-year-old will also be remembered as the first Bruneian to compete on the international stage in the 100m individual medley.
Though compatriot Mohd Bahrin Shah Behrom Shem was not able to notch a national record, he nonetheless broke his personal best in two events competed.
His mark of 57.96s in Dubai bettered his personal best time of 58.99s in the 100m freestyle. He placed 104 of 125.
Mohd Bahrin also beat his 50m breaststroke record, improving it from 34.64s to 33.49s. He finished at 76 of 102.
"Congratulations to all of them, the outing proved to be a wonderful opportunity for the swimmers to gain experience against some of the best swimmers in the world," said Harjimmey Zainal, who is filling in the national coach slot in Dubai, yesterday.
