It is too little too late for the duo of Hj Naim and Abd Rahman Hj Omar in the lawn bowls men's pairs event in the Commonwealth Games yesterday at the Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex.

The highly rated pair won both their games on Friday (against Botswana and Papua New Guinea) and they continued their flying form with victories in both their matches yesterday.

They started out with a 2-1 (16-3, 4-10, 5-0) triumph over Kenya and shook off a slow start for a 2-1 (6-9, 11-3, 4-0) win over Cook Island.

Despite winning six out of their 11 games in Group A, they will not advance to the quarter-finals of the competition.

The men's triples team of Hj Rosli Hj Ibrahim, Md Ali Bujang and Yakup Amit also ended their campaign on a high with a surprise 2-1 (11-7, 4-9, 6-0) win over South Africa.

Eric Johannes, the national lawn bowls coach, was a bronze medallist for the South African side in Melbourne four years ago.

The duo of Esmawandy Ibrahim and Siti Ervi Fedarussanti Umar lost 2-1 (3-10, 4-12) to Malaysia in the pairs women's event.

Meanwhile, Ampuan Kassim Ampuan Ahad started out his tournament on the wrong footing losing both his matches yesterday. He fell to Raymond Mascarenhas of Botswana 2-0 (5-12, 2-13) in his first match and lost to Rob Weales of Wales 2-0 (3-16, 4-15).

Ampuan Kassim will be the only athlete left in the competition as he takes on Leslie Lagatule of Niue Island today.
