Thousands thronged to the Pedestrian Mall at the Indoor Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas to participate in the Olympic Day Run yesterday.

The race was divided into five categories, in which the athletes with special needs category (2km) were further sub-divided into eight categories.

Md Jamary Danggat claimed first in the Blind Open, while Md Hadi Zulhilmi Nirwan and Juwidah Metussin grabbed top spot in the hearing disabilities category for men's and women's respectively.

The Wheelchair Open saw Hirdan Hj Abd Kadir topped the category.

In the intellectual disabilities category for Under-15, Md Nazri Ramli and Norshidah Awg Doming were the fastest in the boy's and girl's division respectively.

Meanwhile Abd Aziz Hj Hussaini won in the intellectual disabilities category for Above-16, and Nuramalshikin Hj Nafiah bagged top spot in the girl's event for the corresponding category.

Abd Malik Hidup took bragging rights when he emerged as the best in the Men's Open Under-49 Years (10km) with a time of 36:04.66 minutes.

Terry Gallagher had to settle for second at 36:30.76 and Zainoor Sam came in third clocking 36:57.03.

With a time of 21:39mins, Tan Siew King was queen of the Women's Open (5km). Mas Diana and Fauitze Tan were second and third respectively.

Noorpaharddi Nordin clinched the title for the Boy's Under-15 Years (5km) category, while Nur Farah Hana Md Abidin won in the Girl's Under-15.

Lee Kim Hing came in with a time of 18:32mins, outrunning the rest of the veterans in the Men's 50 and Above title.

The winners were presented their prizes by President of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council (BNOC) and guest of honour His Royal Highness Prince Hj Sufri Bolkiah, who also competed in the Men's 50 and Above category.

Co-organised by the BNOC and the Department of Youth and Sports, the event is held every year to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympics in 1896.
