Hosts Melaka took three of seven gold medals on offer in wushu yesterday, hauling in eight gold to top the chart on the first official day of competition at the 13th edition of the Malaysia Games (Sukma).
Ho Mun Hua, Chai Fong Wei, and Ng Shin Yii each won their respective wushu events at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka Sports Complex for Melaka to gain an early advantage.
The hosts' wushu exponents, however, had to share the honours with Negri Sembilan, who also grabbed three gold medals to place fourth overall by accumulating four gold medals.
Wong Weng Sin and Phoon E Yin topped the men's and women's jianshu events respectively, while Tai Cheau Xuen won the women's nandao to make it three for Negri.
Negri's other gold came from Ng Say Yoke, Kedah's wushu exponent, prevented both States from making it a clean sweep when he picked up the men's daoshu gold.
The hosts' Goh Mae Jenn, Loh Hui Xin, Nur Azian Irdahani Abdullah, Tan Ing Yueh and Tracie Ang won in gymnastics to add another gold to their tally.
Melaka's other gold was won by Mohammad Hafifi Abdul Hamid and Mohd Nazir Abu Bakar in the men's tempur ganda in pencak silat, picking up 565 points.
Meanwhile, the football competition, which remains the highlight of the Sukma, produced some sizzling results as group matches continued yesterday with Kedah scoring their first win by beating Perlis 1-0 in a Group A match.
Pahang edged Johor 3-2 in a Group B match while Kelantan, who lost 0-4 to Terengganu on Wednesday, beat Penang 1-0 in a Group C match and Selangor scored a convincing 2-0 won over Sarawak in Group D.
Kuala Lumpur and Perak played to a goalless draw while hosts Melaka suffered a 1-0 loss to Sabah.
