His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, President of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council (BDNOC) yesterday witnessed the action-packed first Brunei International Wushu Championships, following the opening ceremony at the Youth Centre in the heart of the capital.

Brunei Darussalam Wushu Federation President Lim Boon Hwa in his opening remark shared, “Since the Brunei Darussalam Wushu Federation’s establishment 21 years ago, apart from hosting the 10th Asian Youth Championship in 2019, this is our second attempt to host a regional wushu competition to give young athletes the opportunity to compete with international athletes and improve their capabilities.”

He added, “Organising such competitions will help upskill local wushu judges and technical personnel’s knowledge needed for future competitions which is important to promote and improve the standard of wushu for our country.”

Athletes Basma Lachkar and Mohd Adi Salihin of the Brunei Wushu National Team read the competition oath following the welcoming remark.

The eight teams competing in the championships include Australian Wushu Team; Brunei Wushu Team; Wen Zhou Yi Tao Quan from China; Thirteen Dynasties Competitive Wushu Association Hong Kong, China; Wushu Aceh, Indonesia; North Sumatra Wushu Indonesia; Ding Feng Wushu Academy, Malaysia; and Wushu Sport Academy, Malaysia.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad as the guest of honour, officiated the ceremony.
