Swimmers, silat athletes leave for Sukma Games

The fourth batch of the Brunei Darussalam national contingent for the ongoing 20th Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2022 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia left the country yesterday.

The 10-member contingent comprises four swimmers and their coach, and six pencak silat athletes and their coach.

The three swimmers are Joel Ling Thai Yu; Nur Haziq Samil; and Hayley Wong Ann Yue accompanied by coach Wu Na. The five pencak silat exponents are Md Izzamuddin bin Taha; Muhammad Alif Asyraf bin Muhammad Jaafar; Awangku Muhd Nabil Merza bin Pengiran Mohd Fazillah; Muhd Amirul Akid bin Haji Nordin; and Muhammad Haziq Aqwa bin Muhd Iman Safwan accompanied by coach Hassan bin Haji Tuah.

Acting Director of Youth and Sports Development Zainab binti Haji Morshidi sent the contingent off at the Brunei International Airport and offered words of advice. In this year’s edition, Brunei Darussalam is competing in five sports namely aquatics (swimming), karate, petanque, pencak silat and wushu.

Brunei first participated in the Sukma Games in 1996. To date, the Sultanate has amassed an overall haul of five gold medals, 12 silver and 28 bronze.

Their best achievement came in 2004 in Negeri Sembilan when they collected one gold, five silver and five bronze.

The country last competed in the 2018 edition in Perak where they won one gold and three bronze.
