Brunei Darussalam missed out on winning a bronze medal at the 31st Southeast Asian (SEA) Games after losing to the Philippines in the women’s team kata event at the Ninh Binh Province Sports Gymnasium in Hanoi, Vietnam on Thursday.

The women’s team comprising Rodhyatul Adhwanna binti Bakar, Farhah Syahirah binti Mohamad Shamrin and Farhana Najeeha binti Abdul Rahman all combined to accumulate a total of 23.88 points in the event.

Brunei entered the bronze medal match after finishing third out of three entries in the third round with a score of 22.28 points.

The top nation from each pool advanced to the gold medal match while the four remaining teams fought for the two available bronze medals.

The women’s kata event marked an end to the campaign for Brunei’s karate representatives.

On the first day of action last Wednesday, Rodhyatul competed in the women’s individual kata event with a score of 22.22 points not enough to put her in the bronze medal shootout.

Meanwhile, Muhd Sufizan bin Mohd Sofian, a bronze medallist from the 2019 SEA Games, was edged 1-0 by Thailand’s Chalermpon Piwlaaiad in the men’s -67 kilogrammes individual kumite event.

His compatriot Awangku Muhd Abdul Quddus bin Pengiran Haji Zainal suffered an 8-0 loss at the hands of Cambodia’s Kouyhav Ly in the first round of the men’s -60 kilogrammes individual kumite event.
