Brunei Darussalam’s polo team made sporting history after they bagged the gold medal with a 7-4 win over Malaysia in the 0-2 low goal event final match of the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games at the Miguel Romero Polo Field in Calatagan, Batangas yesterday.

His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen; His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, President of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council; and Her Royal Highness Princess ‘Azemah Ni’matul Bolkiah attended to watch the match.

His Royal Highness Prince Haji Jefri Bolkiah played a role during the first three games of the 0-2 low goal event.

Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Abdul Qawi was also part of the team.

Also in attendance to watch the final match was Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Bahar.

The country’s second gold in the tournament cemented their place as the most successful away SEA Games since their maiden appearance in 1997, eclipsing a 32-year old record when they accumulated one gold, six silver and 18 bronze in Jakarta, Indonesia in 1987.

Brunei enjoyed the perfect start in the first chukka when they stormed into a 3-0 lead courtesy of a Muhamad Farid Abdullah double and Idris Sirat.

The national team’s explosive display drew a response from Malaysia, who were handed a lifeline after Rashid Hasnan bagged a double in the second chukka.

On to the third chukka, Brunei blew their Malaysian opponents away with a commanding 7-2 lead as Muhamad Farid continued his sizzling form with another brace with a goal from Idris and Huzaimi bin Haji Mahari sandwiched in between.

Rashid pulled the Malaysian back with two goals but it was not enough as time ran out, signalling a momentous occasion for the Brunei polo team and the entire national contingent. The Brunei camp erupted in joy in realisation that they have won gold at the end of the fourth chukka.

Brunei Darussalam began the polo competition with bronze in the 4-6 high goal event.
