HIS Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, President of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council (BDNOC), yesterday attended the gold medal match in the Women’s Pairs event between Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia at the National Lawn Bowls Centre, Bukit Kiara yesterday.

Brunei Darussalam national female duo Dayangku Nurul Nabilah binti Pengiran Md Salleh Chuchu and Esmawandy binti Brahim settled for silver after losing 17-10 to the Malaysia’s pair of Siti Zalina binti Ahmad and Auni Fathiah binti Khamis who grabbed gold.

The hosts exacted redemption in the perfect possible fashion after losing to Brunei 20-15 in the preliminary rounds.

In addition to the Malaysian scalp which included two-time Commonwealth Games champion Siti Zalina, the national duo beat Singapore 22-13 and the Philippines 20-15.

The Brunei pair contributed to the other two silver medals won by their teammates in the men’s lawn bowls and wushu’s emerging star Basma Lachkar.

The country bettered their previous edition in the Southeast Asian Games when the men’s triples team in lawn bowls won the country’s second silver in this edition with the women’s triples team adding the bronze.

Lawn bowls have contributed two silver medals and one bronze in the country’s medal haul.

Malaysia has been hugely successful winning five gold medals so far in lawn bowls with Philippines spoiling a perfect sweep after winning the men’s fours event.

The hosts will be looking to add another two having gained representation in the final for both the Men’s and Women’s Singles through Mohd Soufi bin Rusli and Emma Firyana binti Saroji, respectively.
