BRUNEI’S campaign at the 5th Asian Beach Games in Vietnam came to a close after the national sepak takraw team fell to a 2-1 (21-13, 18-21, 15-21) defeat to Indonesia in the men’s regu event yesterday.

The sultanate started Group B on the wrong foot with a 2-0 (13-21, 12-21) loss to Myanmar on Tuesday.

They needed to beat Indonesia to progress into the semi-finals of the event after bouncing back with a 2-0 (21-14, 21-8) victory over Nepal in yesterday’s earlier match.

Represented by Abdul Hadi Ariffin Metali, Zatie Hidayat Saidi, Md Selamat Yakup and Md Alifuddin Jamaluddin, the team will not be returning to the sultanate empty-handed.

They won the joint-bronze in the trio event after losing 2-1 (21-19, 5-21, 14-21) to Myanmar in the semi-finals on Monday — the same event in which they won gold in the previous edition in 2014 after beating South Korea in the final.

Brunei started out their Group A campaign on Sunday with a 2-1 (12-21, 21-15, 13-21) loss to Indonesia.

They then beat India 2-0 (21-8, 21-12) in the second game on the same day.

The sultanate advanced to the last-four, and a guaranteed medal, after easing past Nepal 2-0 (21-4, 21-6) in their final Group A match on Monday morning.
