THE Brunei Darussalam Athletics Federation (BDAF) is set to join the world in celebrating the 21st IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) World Athletics Day at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium on May 29.

In the boy’s category for athletes aged 16 to 17-years-old, the events are 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m running events, long jump, shot put (5kg) and javelin (700g). The boy’s category aged 13 to 15-years-old will see 50m, 50m hurdles, 4x50m relay, 1000m race walking in the running events, long jump and shot put (4kg). In the girl’s category aged 16 to 17-years-old, the events are 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m running events, long jump, shot put (4kg) and javelin (600g).

The girl’s category aged 13 to 15-years-old will see 50m, 50m hurdles, 4x50m relay, 1000m race walking in the running events, long jump and shot put (3kg). National long distance running coach Suleiman Nyambui expects his athletes to use the event as an opportunity to improve their personal records. Suleiman, who was appointed as the country’s head coach for middle and long races last year, has trained several 800m, 1500m, 5000m and marathon runners.

“The IAAF World Athletics Day is one of the biggest annual events in the world of athletics,” said Suleiman in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday. “Most of the athletes who will be competing are young and this event will give them the opportunity to expose themselves as athletes and hopefully they can improve their personal best records.

“There’s no pressure of course, because at the end of the day, we want to see athletes from schools all over the country to get together and have a good time. “This event will also serve as a platform for the BDAF and coaches to talent spot any potential athletes.

“It is important to have these kind of competitions every year, so let’s hope this year will be a good one,” he added.
