His Royal Highness Prince Hj Sufri Bolkiah left for Lausanne, Switzerland, yesterday to attend the Association of National Olympic Committee (ANOC) Extraordinary General Assembly on Saturday.

The president of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council (BNOC) was accompanied by BNOC vice president Hj Muhd Zamri Dato Paduka Hj Hamdani.

Present at the Brunei International Airport to send off HRH was Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Hj Hazair Hj Abdullah and the other officials from the ministry.

The ANOC Extraordinary General Assembly will take place at the Beaulieu Lausanne Congress Center and will feature some 600 delegates from 204 National Olympic Committees (NOCs).

There will also be representatives from all three Olympic Games organising committees and 2020 candidate cities, as well as representatives of Olympic International Federations.

HRH attended the XVIII ANOC General Assembly and 2nd World Olympic Sports Convention in Moscow, Russia in April 10 last year.

During the meeting, all regional NOCs, instead of individual NOCs, were required to submit their annual reports.

According to the ANOC website, the ANOC Executive Council held its recent 59th meeting in Sydney, Australia on March 5.

As per the agenda, the executive council approved the draft Constitution that will be sent to the National Olympic Committees for approval at this Saturday's ANOC Extraordinary General Assembly.

The Executive Council also approved the recommendations of the Modernisation Commission which will guide the future activities of ANOC.

It also unanimously decided that the 2014 ANOC General Assembly will be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in October 2014.

The meeting will continue on the next day with the inauguration ceremony of the Australian Olympic Committee's (AOC) new headquarters.

Earlier, ANOC President Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al-Sabah handed over a gift to the AOC President John D Coates to commemorate the opening of the new offices of the AOC.

The ANOC president was also awarded the Australian Olympic Committee's Order of Merit.

Sheikh Ahmad is only the second sports leader from overseas to receive this prestigious award. The first was IOC President, Jacques Rogge.

The ANOC was created during the Constitutive General Assembly held on in 1979 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, convened as the IX General Assembly of the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and chaired by Mr Mario Vazquez Raa.

The first General Assembly of the NOCs had taken place in Rome in 1965.
