Special Olympics (SO) Brunei A were definitely in high spirits despite having to compete in less than favourable weather conditions at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas yesterday.

Brunei A won both their games in last night's rain, allowing them to put one foot into the semi-finals of the 5th Special Olympics Borneo Cup 5-a-side football tournament.

They had the best possible start in their campaign, defeating defending champions Berau (Kalimantan, Indonesia) 4-0 in Group B.

They went on to thrash Brunei C 9-3 in dominant fashion in their second match.

Brunei A were passing with precision and their teamwork showed on the field.

It should be no surprise as well considering that they are the same side that won the Asean 5 + 1 Football Tournament in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia, back in September.

Brunei A Head Coach Hj Wahid Ismail was delighted with the results.

"The team played really well in the first game and the weather was considered good. (It) allowed us to get a good scoreline. In the second game, we were taking things lightly as we were winning by a good margin early on," said Hj Wahid in an interview with The Brunei Times after the wins.

"We have one more game left in the group stage and we are confident that we can win it to stay on top of the group going into the semi-finals," he said.

I thought we had a favourable draw but it will still be dependent on the players and hopefully they can keep it up," he added.

The eight teams were drawn into two groups yesterday after the opening ceremony at the competition venue which was attended by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Hj Hazair Hj Abdullah.

Brunei A's last group stage game will be against Bontang (Kalimantan) today at 10.30am.

The other teams in the competition that make up Group A are Sabah, Sarawak, Tarakan (Kalimantan) and Brunei B.

The semi-finals is slated for 2.30pm with the final right after.
