Tuesday, November 15, 2011

The national 10-pin bowling team are ready to strike at the 26th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Jakarta.

The team of Mohd Shawall Mustafa, Pg Eshamuddin Pg Hj Mohiddin, Mohd Haidir Fadzillah Hj Noor Ismadi, Ahmad Athery Hj Abd Samad and Pg Md Rudisofy Pg Hj Tajuddin will open their campaign in the men's singles today at the Jaya Ancol Bowling Centre.

The keglers have also been entered for the doubles, trios, five-player team and two-block masters finals.

They are no strangers to the venue having competed in the 9th Indonesia International Open in July. Their performance at the competition was the ticket to competing at the Games.

The team made their return to the venue and had their official practice sessions yesterday and national bowling coach Mike Griffith was upbeat about their chances.

"Practice went well and our athletes are gaining confidence. The field will be strong, but we have a good chance if we can bowl well," said Griffith during a phone interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.

Mohd Haidir has the best medal prospect having won silver in the men's masters open at the Arafura Games in Darwin, Australia, in May.

There will only be seven nations Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia vying for top honours in the bowling event that will run till Nov 20.
